After World War I, Europe’s dormant poppy seeds bloomed as the ground was cultivated and dug up for graves to honor fallen soldiers. In 1918 Moina Michael sold silk poppies as a means of raising funds to assist disabled veterans, thereby popularizing the idea of wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day to remember those heroes.
