CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 17 RESIDENTS AND OTHERS INTERESTED

NARFE Chapter 50 and NARFE Tri Valley is inviting District 17 members of AARP to meet Ro Khanna, who is running for the congressional seat in this district, at a luncheon meeting on Tuesday May 24th at Holders Country Inn Restaurant on 998 S. De Anza Blvd, San Jose, CA. (just south of Bollinger Rd). He is scheduled to speak from 11:30am to 12:30pm which will include a Q & A period.  We encourage members to submit questions in advance.  From 12:30 to 2:30pm lunch will be served. In order to use this attractive meeting room for free, Holders Restaurant has requested that we all have a meal.  There are eight menu choices which you will select as you reserve your spot at the Tour Table. Even if you don’t live in Dist. 17, you are encouraged to come.
Ro Khanna was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce in and is currently a visiting lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and was a Professor of law at Santa Clara University.  In addition to being an educator, Ro serves as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Smart Utility Systems, a Santa Clara based company dedicated to promoting energy efficiency through the use of smart technology.
Ro knows we need to strengthen and defend Social Security and Medicare. Therefore, he supports the following:

1. Protect the retirement age.

2. Support increasing benefits for seniors to keep up with the high cost of living.

3. Hold healthcare providers and insurers accountable for cutting costs.

4. Make sure that seniors get every penny of the benefits that they worked for, and opposes efforts to slash Medicare and Social Security.

Well it finally happened. My computer has fouled up my Publisher program and I can only access the first page of any issue. So you are getting a short version this month without all the contact data etc. Hopefully things will be better next month. President’s Message…Ken Schieck

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND

A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL!

As I write my first AARP letter as your new president, let me introduce myself.

I am Ken Schieck, and my wife Margaret and I have been active members of the Campbell Chapter since June 2010. I served as co-chair of the Opportunity Drawings for four years and have just completed a 2 year stint as your chapter VicePresident.

I retired from the California Employment Department in 2010 after serving 18 years as a veterans workforce services specialist; in that capacity, I assisted veterans in their preparation and search for employment. As part of that service, I became involved with local veteran service organizations such as the Veterans Employment Committee of Santa Clara County, the San Jose Vet Center and Chapter 201 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Currently, I also lector at our church and distribute Communion to the sick at O’Connor Hospital.

Everyone contributes to the activities and great spirit of our local chapter; you, the members, make it one of the most active in the country. By focusing on a mission and vision for our chapter, as well as expanded outreach, we can offer new members the opportunity to share the ‘vibe’ and companionship which our chapter offers.

I pledge to listen to your ideas and implement them as best I can.

Thank you for your support.

This is the latest I have on the few things in front of the Legislature before they pass the new budget:

SB 323 (Hernandez) – Nurse Practitioners to be able to practice to the full extent of their training – Hearing will have been on June 16, at 9 AM I hope everyone was there in red shirts giving their support. As of this writing, I won’t have an update as to what the outcome was/is, but will have it for you next time!

ACR 38 (Brown) – Caregiver Task Force to examine issues faced by family caregivers – This is up in Senate Human Services on Tuesday, June 9 at 1:30 PM. No word yet as to the outcome. I will update you in the August Newsletter.

SB 675 (Liu) – Transitional Care requiring hospitals to notify family caregivers of a patient’s discharge and to provide instructions regarding post hospital care – the CARE Act has passed the Senate and heads to the Assembly. No hearing date has been set yet.

State Budget Update – The legislature passed a budget on June 16th. The Conference Committee had been working all week. AARP has weighed in on a few items that reflect what emerged from the Assembly or Senate Budget Committees. They are as follows:

1) AARP supports the 3.8 million dollar budget augmentation for the Caregiver Resource Centers (CRCs). This will ensure that unpaid family caregivers receive the direct core services necessary to keep their loved ones at home.

2) We are also urging the legislature to adopt the enhanced funding formula for the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program from the Assembly Budget recommendation. Regular Ombudsman presence saves the State of California money by detecting and resolving complaints before they escalate into regulatory violations and crimes requiring the involvement of higher-cost agencies such as law enforcement and licensing agencies or causing serious harm to facility residents requiring medical services thru the Medi-Cal program.

3) We are also asking them to adopt the Assembly Budget proposal to restore the COLA provided to Social Security Income/State Supplementary Payment (SSI/SSP) recipients starting January 1, 2016, with a cost of $33 million General Fund. SSI/SSP provides modest income support to the most impoverished seniors and disabled adults. At a minimum, this allows many to avoid total destitution and homelessness, and to age in their own homes and communities with independence and dignity.

4) We support the proposals in both committees to restore the seven-percent reduction in the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) hours. IHSS not only enables seniors and persons with disabilities to age in place, but it may also provide caregivers with necessary respite to run errands or go to work. There are a few more items for which AARP is giving its support, because they will allow seniors and people with disabilities to age in their own homes and communities with dignity and independence. But I am running out of space here and will update and give you a full report in the next newsletter.
