SC County Can Use Your Help to Decrease Spread of COVID-19

Volunteers, even remote volunteers, are needed by Santa Clara County to help fight COVID-19. By completing a short volunteer survey, you can be best matched to role(s) that use your skill set.  Each role will support front line staff and first responders, creating a healthier, safer community.  Whether you work in health care or not, talents of all kind are welcome and encouraged.

Currently, there is a significant need for volunteers of all types to support staff in a variety of settings, including remotely.  See the web site, below for a more complete list.

Passing of Marlene Hruby

Remembering Marlene Hruby … Marilyn Clough

Sadly, we mark the passing of Marlene Hruby on May 14, 2020.  Details can be found through the Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary on the internet (some details below).  Marlene and her husband, Ron, were such valuable members of our chapter that it’s hard to know where to begin.  Along with raising two sons and two daughters, they were active in many professional, educational, and community organizations.  When younger, they hiked all over central California and supported local nature conservation activities.  Marlene worked for Westinghouse as an administrative assistant for many years.

After retiring, Marlene was not only the editor of our Dispatch, she also edited another organization’s newsletter, for over a decade. She was president of our chapter for two years shortly after Ron’s death, and also served on our Tours and Nominating committees, among other chapter activities.

Marlene and Ron never missed a theatrical presentation in our area.  What a performance by both of them!  They will be missed by many in our community.

A small graveside service, due to Santa Clara County restrictions (ten attendees only), is planned for Marlene. The funeral will be at NOON on Friday, June 5, at Mission City Memorial Park in Santa Clara. Marlene’s grandson, Nicholas Xydes, is investigating a live broadcast for those not able to attend in person (likely to be Facebook live) as most members of her family do use Facebook.

I am going to be an author! Restaurants Deliver: Home Meals for Seniors

Governor Newsom announced Friday, April 24, the launch of a first-in-the-nation “Restaurants Deliver: Home Meals for Seniors” partnership with counties, cities, and Tribes.

Restaurants Deliver has two purposes:

• Help older and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day, and

• Provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses and workers struggling to stay afloat during the COVID crisis.

As the local programs get established in the next few days, more information will be provided on this page. In the meantime, here are resources that are available now:

• Enter your location into 211.org to find local services, such as nutrition, financial, health care, and housing assistance. Every community has an Aging and Adult Info Line to connect to aging and adult services: 1-800-510-2020.

• Visit the California Department of Aging’s COVID-19 page for a list of resources for older and other at-risk adults.

• Do you suspect someone is being neglected or abused? Call Adult Protective Services at 833-401-0832.

• Suspect fraud? AARP has a Fraud Watch Network Helpline: 877-908-3360.

• Concerned about someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s or their caregiver? Call the Alzheimer’s Association: 800-272-3900.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!  Even though our general meeting is on Tuesday, February 18, let’s wear red, pink, and lilac.

Scams against the elderly are common and nothing to laugh about; many seniors have been scammed out of money and even their life savings.  However, some scams are so poorly planned and thought out that they deserve ridicule.

One such is what I call the “IRS scam”; some of you are probably familiar with the female robot voice which says something to the effect that “the IRS has issued an outstanding warrant for your arrest.  If you do not report to the magistrate, you will be expired in four days.”  First of all, the scammer doesn’t seem to know that there are no magistrate courts in the U.S.; those exist in Great Britain.  Second of all, what does it mean to be expired?  Maybe the robot thinks we are all library cards or gift cards/coupons that are about to outlive their usefulness?  I wish I had a sports whistle to blow into the phone – but then there might be a real person behind the robot, and I don’t want to damage their eardrum.  Remember:  THE IRS WILL ONLY CONTACT YOU BY SNAIL MAIL.
