Cybersecurity: Public WiFi…Rick Loek

I enjoy working in coffee shops, restaurants, airports and even hotel lobbies. However there are crooks everywhere. Public WiFi is apparently easy to fake or overtake. If you are connecting to a public WiFi, confirm with the establishment that you are on the correct network. Pretty much everyone agrees never do banking on a public WiFi. If you must do online banking while away from your home network, consider connecting with your phone’s network. This video and webpage go deeper on this subject: < https:// usa.kaspersky.com/resource-center/preemptivesafety/public-wifi >. Never ever give personal financial information in email, never! Look at < http://CampbellAARP.org > for more useful posts and resources and join a webinar at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Go to < aarp.org > to sign up.

Legislative Report…Daniel Nnorth and Claudia Schott

Three things that are hanging in the balance:

What does affordable health care mean for you?

Tell Congress: nothing can fix this bad bill. Congressional leaders are still trying to push their higher cost, less coverage health care bill through the Senate – our efforts are working! But we still have far to go. To protect health care for millions, we need to show Senators that this is about people. Will you share how the health care bill will impact you? Tell us what health care means to you and we’ll share it with elected officials before they vote. Here’s the website:

Make sure the loophole stays closed.

Last year, thanks to thousands of AARP advocates like you, the Department of Labor closed the loophole that allowed some financial advisers to take advantage of Americans saving for retirement. Now Wall Street special interests and their allies in Washington want to reopen the loophole, and we need your help to stop them. Tell Congress to protect your hard-earned retirement savings. Here’s the website to take action:

Health care update: Could this bad bill get worse?

It may seem impossible, but the Senate is considering the Cruz amendment that would make the bad health care bill even worse. Call your Senators at 1-844-222-0110 and tell them to say NO to skyrocketing premiums for Americans 50-64 years old and those with preexisting conditions like cancer, diabetes, and asthma. Watch our update now!

AARP advocates are telling Senators to vote NO. Don’t forget to let your Senators how you feel about this, too! Every little bit helps. Keep up the good work and keep those phones and computers buzzing!

When you volunteer at Sacred Heart Community Services you become aware of how many disadvantaged poor families there are in adjacent communities. Sacred Heart is in the process of putting together a staggering 3300 Pack-A-Back packages of school supplies to get these children off to a great start in the upcoming school year. Our Chapter has always supported this effort and we, too, are off to a great start. Please bring school supplies to our August meeting. Take advantage of sales advertised in local media—you might get a further discount if you mention they are for Sacred Heart.

President…Ken Schieck

This past week, Margaret and I have seen two different types of plays and enjoyed both. Sunday July 23, we went to City Lights and saw LIZZIE, a musical version of the life of Lizzie Borden (‘Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother forty whacks……….you can’t cut your poppa up in Massachusetts’ as duly noted in the early 60’s by the Chad Mitchell trio). The roughly 2 ½ hour play was anchored by just four young actors, who played Lizzie, Emma (her sister), Maggie (the housemaid) and Alice (the next door neighbor). This play is featured until Aug. 20.

Saturday July 29, the Montgomery Theater featured ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ by Children’s Musical Theater. There were about 50 actors featured as statues, gypsies, townspeople, monks and soldiers; some of them had beautiful voices and some were aging out of this kind of venue (at 14 to 20 years of age). You would not believe the beauty of the props and the orchestral sound! This one is featured until Aug. 6. As they say in show biz, ‘The play’s the thing’ and ‘Break a leg.’

The social committee is looking forward to seeing you at the AARP lunch on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Edith Morley Park in Campbell (see Pg 3); more information is coming at the general meeting on Aug. 15.

We wish AARP member Merrill Peevyhouse the best of luck as he moves to the Placerville area to live with his family.

Famous people born in August include Tom Brady (Aug.3), Barack Obama (Aug.4), Madison Bumgarner (Aug.21), Jerry Garcia (Aug.23), Lyndon Johnson (Aug.27) and Ted Williams (Aug.30).
