Basim Jaber is a lifelong South Bay native and freelance photographer who has researched the history and geography of Mt. Umunhum and the Almaden Air Force Station since 2006.  He continues to archive historic images and artifacts from Almaden Air Force Station. You’ll be amazed at the size of the AF base in its prime. Marlene and Angie saw his presentation at H2U and found it very interesting. We are sure you will also.

CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 17 RESIDENTS AND OTHERS INTERESTED

NARFE Chapter 50 and NARFE Tri Valley is inviting District 17 members of AARP to meet Ro Khanna, who is running for the congressional seat in this district, at a luncheon meeting on Tuesday May 24th at Holders Country Inn Restaurant on 998 S. De Anza Blvd, San Jose, CA. (just south of Bollinger Rd). He is scheduled to speak from 11:30am to 12:30pm which will include a Q & A period.  We encourage members to submit questions in advance.  From 12:30 to 2:30pm lunch will be served. In order to use this attractive meeting room for free, Holders Restaurant has requested that we all have a meal.  There are eight menu choices which you will select as you reserve your spot at the Tour Table. Even if you don’t live in Dist. 17, you are encouraged to come.
Ro Khanna was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce in and is currently a visiting lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and was a Professor of law at Santa Clara University.  In addition to being an educator, Ro serves as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Smart Utility Systems, a Santa Clara based company dedicated to promoting energy efficiency through the use of smart technology.
Ro knows we need to strengthen and defend Social Security and Medicare. Therefore, he supports the following:

1. Protect the retirement age.

2. Support increasing benefits for seniors to keep up with the high cost of living.

3. Hold healthcare providers and insurers accountable for cutting costs.

4. Make sure that seniors get every penny of the benefits that they worked for, and opposes efforts to slash Medicare and Social Security.

President’s Message…Ken Schieck

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND

A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL!

As I write my first AARP letter as your new president, let me introduce myself.

I am Ken Schieck, and my wife Margaret and I have been active members of the Campbell Chapter since June 2010. I served as co-chair of the Opportunity Drawings for four years and have just completed a 2 year stint as your chapter VicePresident.

I retired from the California Employment Department in 2010 after serving 18 years as a veterans workforce services specialist; in that capacity, I assisted veterans in their preparation and search for employment. As part of that service, I became involved with local veteran service organizations such as the Veterans Employment Committee of Santa Clara County, the San Jose Vet Center and Chapter 201 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Currently, I also lector at our church and distribute Communion to the sick at O’Connor Hospital.

Everyone contributes to the activities and great spirit of our local chapter; you, the members, make it one of the most active in the country. By focusing on a mission and vision for our chapter, as well as expanded outreach, we can offer new members the opportunity to share the ‘vibe’ and companionship which our chapter offers.

I pledge to listen to your ideas and implement them as best I can.

Thank you for your support.
