AARP January Meeting … Margaret Schieck and Paul Levine

The speaker for our January 19, 2021, meeting will be Jan Masters.  She was born in Alameda and raised as an Air Force brat in various states and countries.  That probably accounts for her interests in languages, travel and cultural history.  She has a BA in art history from UC Santa Barbara and a MA in art history from San Jose State.

She has had 3 professional careers. Her first was teaching art history at West Valley College.  Her second (some 30 years) was in marketing communications and technical writing for several semiconductor firms in Silicon Valley.  Her current career (11 years) is teaching non-credit art history, music history and other cultural history classes for the Older Adults Program of West Valley College.

Topic for the meeting:

—Introduction of the Older Adults Program: purpose and benefits to participants.

—Summary of Spring Program via Zoom.

—Plans for the future.

AARP December Meeting…Paul Levine

The entertainer for our December 15, 2020, meeting will be Mark Wallace, a talented singer, guitarist, and songwriter.  Mark was born in 1949 in 29 Palms, CA, and lived in the Bay Area for many years where he worked as a professional handyman (Jack-of-All-Trades and Master-of-Many.)  He was a long-time member of the San Jose Peace Chorale and entertained at many area weddings as well as at the Unity Temple, Moraga Concert Hall (Santa Cruz), and the Great Hall at Betty Peck’s (Saratoga).  He recently moved to Colorado to be with his childhood sweetheart, Tori Palmer, a retired veterinarian.

For our program, Mark will be singing favorite and obscure seasonal songs of Joy and Praise that people can sing along with (as long as they are muted).

AARP November Meeting … Paul Levine and Sharon Levine

The speaker at our Nov. 17, 2020, meeting will be Nancy Nelson, a Speakers Bureau Volunteer for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, a role she has held for many years.  Nancy is a human resource consultant and started volunteering in the 1990s with Second Harvest when she organized Food and Fund Drives as an HR Director.  Nancy is passionate about eliminating hunger in our community and believes that, when individuals, community partners and corporations work together, we can make this vision a reality.

Nancy will speak about the face of hunger in Silicon Valley, statistics on the number and type of clients served, how Second Harvest distributes food through community partners and direct services, the critical role volunteers play in meeting the need for food, Second Harvest’s focus on nutrition, and how you can help.

Our scheduled speaker for the October 20, 2020, meeting via Zoom is Ken Toren, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Silicon Valley, who will talk to us about the mission of the Red Cross.  In the past, Ken has served in leadership positions for start-ups, private/public companies, and non-profits.  In the healthcare sector, Ken held important roles with REDmedic (Blue Cross), the Parkinson’s Institute, Cancer CAREpoint, and UCSF Global Health and Asthma Research.  In the for-profit sector, he was CEO and VP of several companies including LONMARK International (Adesto) and Onomy Labs (Xerox).  Ken’s non-profit experience includes executive staff roles at JCCs/Jewish Federations and Hope Services. Ken earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Pennsylvania State University and Temple University.  He lives in the Bay Area with his wife, children, and Rocky, the best Border Collie rescue dog ever.

AARP September Meeting … Paul Levine

The speakers for our September 15, 2020, meeting will be from the League of Women Voters (LWV) who will discuss the ballot issues in the upcoming November election.  LWV presenters will open a zoom meeting live and show a recording of the pros and cons of each ballot measure.

There are 12 state propositions, 3 county measures and 2 local measures for those living in our League’s coverage area.  In the presentations, they will address the pros and cons of the state ballot measures, pause after each measure for questions, and also highlight the county and local measures.

The LWV is a national, non-partisan, volunteer organization committed to voter engagement and education,  The LWV of Southwest Santa Clara Valley, which covers the cites of Campbell, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, and Saratoga, will host a Zoom  Pro and Con webinar meeting with our AARP chapter  on Tuesday, September 15 at 10:00 AM.  Check-in will start at 9:50 AM.

Chapter members will receive an email on Monday, September 14, giving instructions for attending the meeting(s); 9 AM for the general meeting and 10 AM for the LWV-led meeting.

The scheduled speaker for our August 18 Zoom meeting is Belinda Sifford, Chair of the Access Advisors, a support group of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor).  She will discuss museum access in the time of Covid-19 and the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

AARP July Meeting … Paul Levine

Since the Campbell Community Center is not permitting large gatherings in July, we are planning to hold an online meeting using Zoom on Tuesday, July 21, at 10:00 AM.  Email and telephone Instructions will be provided prior to the meeting.

The entertainer for our meeting is magician Phil Ackerly.  Phil has created over 5,000 shows all over the country, including Off-Broadway and at Hollywood’s Magic Castle.

In 2019, he won Best Stage Magician in two separate competitions by the Oakland Magic Circle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians.  And every year he produces a fundraiser show for the South Bay Blue Star Moms, raising money to send care packages to the troops during the holiday season.

Phil Ackerly always presents a fun show, each one different and more amazing than the previous. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeves for us on July 21st.

Program … Ken Schieck & Paul Levine

The speaker for our March 17 meeting will be Anne Karoly who will talk about the 2020 census and the need for a complete and accurate count for our community.  The Census determines our representation in Congress and determines how 675 billion dollars in federal funds are distributed to the states.  She will describe how we will be invited to participate in the Census, the ways we can each submit our own household’s questionnaire and will answer questions we may have.

Anne Karoly has worked for the U.S. Census Bureau since January 2019.  As a Partnership Specialist, she works with local organizations to raise awareness and encourage participation in the 2020 Census.  She is assigned to Santa Clara County to engage community organizations, networks and leaders on the importance of a complete and accurate population count.

A native Californian, she has returned after 23 years living on the East Coast.  She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in non-profits, senior programs, and faith-based organizations.  When not working, Anne enjoys being out-of-doors, reading and quilting.
