Community Service…Sheila Gold
As I sit here in my comfy bed in an assisted living residence, I think of what I have learned during the last month after my move here from my son’s apartment. I had always thought of preplanning as pertaining to cremation or burial. But now I realize I should have done a lot more homework in the kind of facility I might end up in before that last need. Please know your total monthly rent bill will be much higher than you planned when you add additional fees for help with showering, transferring, dressing, and medicine distribution. These costs are weighed against peace of mind knowing that help is just a push of the call button on a lanyard around your neck. Can you live in a studio or one bedroom? Remember the dreaded HOA fees from your condo? Well, they’re back in the form of a community fund. Hopefully your relationship with your siblings will enable you to work together for the best care for your family or yourself. Remember you are setting an example for how your children or grandchildren will treat you.
Think twice and good luck with your choice.

Cybersecurity—Security Is An Illusion…Rick Loek
In or around 1996 I was excited to be learning a new programming language, Java. This new language was very much an infant. I was at the first developer conference having lunch with the chief security person. I started asking questions about security. He says to me, “Rick, security is an illusion. At best there are levels of security.” What did he mean? Basically you can do what you know to do to protect your computer and your identity, but you are still exposed. My late father once had some odd activity on his credit report. I requested that he call the credit agency and freeze his account. At that time they would freeze the account for free. If you called to unfreeze it they may or may not access a fee. I found this page to be loaded with useful information on protecting yourself from scammers.

Legislative Report

Legislative Report…Daniel Nnorth and Claudia Schott
Happy New Year! We are hitting the ground running and fighting for our needs! Last month I wrote the statement that AARP had made regarding Social Security. This month, AARP has expanded on their statement. They have stated their principles which will guide them as they fight for us and future generations of retired persons.

  • Achieve long-term solvency and adequacy. Social Security should be sufficiently financed to ensure solvency for the long term. Solvency proposals must ensure meaningful benefits for future generations. 
  • Reaffirm Social Security’s fundamental character. Social Security should continue to provide a stable foundation for retirement income. It should remain a partnership among individuals, employers and the federal government. It should also maintain its role in providing protection for workers and families affected by death or disability. All covered workers should contribute equitably to the program and receive benefits. 
  • Ensure protections for those most in need. Reforms should take into account the needs of those most reliant on Social Security and those who have difficulty postponing retirement. 
  • Recognize the value of Social Security’s core elements. Social Security should continue to reward work. The key elements of Social Security’s successful program structure should be preserved: progressive, defined benefits that cannot be outlived; inflation protection; and benefits related to earnings. 
  • Make improvements to reflect today’s workforce. An updated Social Security program must address the economic and demographic changes over the last 80 years to be able to respond to the needs of future beneficiaries and their families.
  • Ensure fairness. Changes to the program should be implemented gradually and should protect current beneficiaries and near retirees.

AARP is also asking for our help with Medicare. It seems that it is always on the chopping block and now is the time for us to rise to the occasion. AARP is looking to collect Medicare stories. With benefits at risk of being cut, they are asking individuals to share what Medicare means to them and how cuts would impact them and their family. Stories can be submitted at: https://action.aarp.org/site/SPageNavigator/2016_Medicare_Story_Share_SM.html. I hope I can count on all of you to help out! Have a great year!

Cybersecurity Stop. Think. Connect™…Rick Loek

Stop. Think. Connect is a program that was launched in October of 2010. The program was created by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Anti-Phishing Work Group (APWG) and The U.S. Department of Homeland Security. They have created a website with many resources.  There is a tips and advice section https:// www.stopthinkconnect.org/tips-advice that contains useful advice in various languages and a variety of topics.

Topics such as:

  • Keep a Clean Machine
  • Be Web Wise
  • Protect Your Personal Information
  • Be a Good Online Citizen
  • Connect With Care
  • Own Your Online Presence

Usernames are something I’ve not given much thought to until my Wells Fargo account kept getting locked down. It seems some other website was compromised and my generic user-id was being entered on Wells Fargo secure site. I found that unique user IDs on banking websites are also needed.  This happened a couple of years ago.  I was using a simple user-id.  Not only do passwords need to be carefully distinguished, so do user-ids.  For example, davesmith as a user-id on generic website might be okay.  For banking and the like consider davesmith182 or dave182smith.  Some variant that can’t be guessed. https://www.lockdownyourlogin.com/  Look at http://CampbellAARP.org for more useful posts and resources.
