Community Service…Marilyn Clough

Hopefully, many of you helped in your own way with getting out this month’s vote in the mid-term election.  What a relief that’s over!   Now we can concentrate on collecting our volunteer hours; rounding up eyeglasses, hearing aids, books-on-tape, and other useful items; and putting a bag together for Sacred Heart Community Service.   A year-round need exists for all these items (except the election!)  As Thanksgiving season draws near, we in our community can certainly appreciate how fortunate we are personally and that so many organizations, including our chapter, exist to help others.

Nominating Committee…Jan Deluchi

During the next meeting, members will be voting on the 2019 Slate of Officers and Chairpersons. I want to thank all of the members who have volunteered to help us through this year. I hope you will continue to help when needed.

President…Ken Schieck

This month I must pass on the sad news that both Daphne

and George Depold died recently; they were members of AARP until about 4 years ago, and they were living recently in an assisted-living facility in Santa Clara. George was a participant in the D-Day offensive and was well known in the local veteran community. George had close ties to many local veterans’ organizations: our American Legion post, the San Jose Veterans Center, and The Olive Tree (Campbell’s Veterans Memorial Foundation). George started our troop support effort in 2006, mailing care packages to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq before this activity became a chapter project. He served on our board of directors for many years and was responsible for getting us involved in the Moffett Field gift wrap extravaganza. George had two bricks in his honor at the Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation and they have an 8 x 8 paver in place to honor him as their first ‘veteran of the year.’ He was also an honorary chaplain for the organization. In addition, George was the troops chairperson, and he was in charge of the AARP Christmas wrap with the sheriff. Daphne was involved in the Campbell Seniors Caring Hearts Club. They make little hats and blankets for babies in the hospitals. George and Daphne met during World War II while he was in the Army stationed in England. Daphne came to our country with him as a war bride, was a member of the local war brides association, and a leader and expert knitter in our Community Center’s Busy Hands/Caring Hearts group. Their involvement in so many activities is a true example of what “Community Service” is all about. We can all try to follow in their footsteps. The Foundation will let us know after their Oct. 5 meeting how they plan to honor him.

Santa Clara Players’ Outreach Program will present this month’s program which will focus on humorous readings and vignettes. This wonderful group has been providing entertainment to organizations throughout Santa Clara County for 35 years. Two of the actors performing for us will also be in their upcoming play, Exit the Body, running from 10/26 thru 11/17 at the Triton Museum Hall. If you enjoy theater in a small, intimate setting, we highly recommend Santa Clara Players. They offer interesting plays, matinees and evenings, at a nominal fee three times a year. Check your computer for days and price.

We thank Liz Gibbons who, with the assistance of our member Barbara Robinson, spoke at the last minute about several measures on the November election ballot.  Our membership had some interesting insights and contributions, which made the program really meaningful.

AARP has a voter engagement campaign titled “Be the Difference. Vote”. If you haven’t already, please commit to voting on November 6th by signing our voters’ pledge and visit

https://action.aarp.org/site/SPageNavigator/2018_Voter_Pledge.html. We want to raise the voice and share the importance of the 50+ voter. We want voters to ask important questions to the candidates around issues impacting the 50+ community.

Before you cast your vote on Nov. 6, make sure you know where candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate and presidency stand on these three issues:

  1. How would you protect Social Security for today’s seniors and strengthen it for future generations?
  2. How would you put Medicare on stronger financial ground and protect today’s seniors and future retirees from the

    burden of rising health costs?

  3. How would you help Americans build a financial nest egg for their retirement?
