President…Marlene Hruby

On publication date we still have 30 members who have not paid their 2016 dues. How soon we forget! These dues pay for your Dispatch ($900 per year), entertainment programs, two monthly lunches at the senior lunch program, printing, postage, insurance, some refreshments and miscellaneous. Although the treasure chest and opportunity drawing bring in some money, it is your dues that keep the chapter solvent. If you have not already sent dues to Shelly, please do so NOW with the coupon on page 3. If you wait until the meeting, poor Shelly will be swamped. Rick, Paddy and I had a budget meeting and this budget will be available for your perusal on the literature table.

We need to improve our communication with each other and with visitors. Please use the social time to converse with neighbors and especially introduce yourselves to the visitors. We want to increase our membership and unfortunately we have several people who have moved or have decided not to join us this year.

President’s Message…Marlene Hruby

Our resourceful treasurer, Rick Loeck, has arranged a Fund Raiser after the meeting at Rock Bottom Brewery, not just at lunchtime but all day except for Happy Hour! If you need more coupons for friends, family, neighbors, or another group, call me at 408- 379-4809 after July 12. I will be out of town before that. I have five coupons on a page. Hey guys, it’s a brewery with lots of booze choices! Hope to see lots of you there! Please carefully read the Southwest Experience article on page 3. It sounds like a great trip. Email members will be getting the brochure with this Dispatch, and for hard copy members if you want a brochure before the meeting, just call me with the timetable above.

President’s Message…Marlene Hruby

I am happy to report that many of you have renewed your membership for 2016. However, there are many who have not yet paid. If you have not renewed, this will be your last Dispatch. You do not want to miss our future interesting speakers or our social activities. I see seniors arriving at the Campbell 11:30 lunch program as early as 9:30 because they have nothing else to do. Don’t let this be you! A happy senior is an active senior. Please bring your completed renewal application on page 3 of this issue and a check for either $12 or $15 to the March 15 meeting. See you then!

Well it finally happened. My computer has fouled up my Publisher program and I can only access the first page of any issue. So you are getting a short version this month without all the contact data etc. Hopefully things will be better next month. Please read the Legislative report below and join us for this presentation.

President’s Message…Ken Schieck

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND

A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL!

As I write my first AARP letter as your new president, let me introduce myself.

I am Ken Schieck, and my wife Margaret and I have been active members of the Campbell Chapter since June 2010. I served as co-chair of the Opportunity Drawings for four years and have just completed a 2 year stint as your chapter VicePresident.

I retired from the California Employment Department in 2010 after serving 18 years as a veterans workforce services specialist; in that capacity, I assisted veterans in their preparation and search for employment. As part of that service, I became involved with local veteran service organizations such as the Veterans Employment Committee of Santa Clara County, the San Jose Vet Center and Chapter 201 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Currently, I also lector at our church and distribute Communion to the sick at O’Connor Hospital.

Everyone contributes to the activities and great spirit of our local chapter; you, the members, make it one of the most active in the country. By focusing on a mission and vision for our chapter, as well as expanded outreach, we can offer new members the opportunity to share the ‘vibe’ and companionship which our chapter offers.

I pledge to listen to your ideas and implement them as best I can.

Thank you for your support.

Thanks to those who attended the January 20th anniversary luncheon. It was an experiment that had good points and bad points. I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless. We will discuss venue  and date for this year’s luncheon during the summer.
There was a problem with the hard copy mailing list for the January Dispatch. The zip codes were mostly wrong, although only a few were returned to me. I am so sorry. The list has now been checked and rechecked so this issue should be delivered correctly. I have also heard second and third hand that some members did not receive other issues. If there is a problem with delivery, you need to tell ME. I can’t fix it if I don’t know there is a problem, either by snail mail or e-mail.
Let’s all do our part in recruiting new members for our chapter. Pick up a couple chapter brochures to give to neighbors and friends, even enemies. See you on February 16.

If you would like to go to the January 19 luncheon, please call Bette right away. We must give a count on Friday, Jan. 8 but we can add some if necessary. We will be honoring four members who were at the very first meeting! We also need two more singers to join a small choir. How’s your voice? Call me if you’d  like to participate for a couple song parodies. It’s been quite a holiday season with accidents, operations, and sickness everywhere. Let’s hope things improve soon. Please get more involved in 2016. We need a temporary Treasure Chest manager (see article on Page 3) and Carole needs an assistant for the Opportunity Drawing. We need refreshment donors and servers. No one has signed up for February and March, so if you want coffee and goodies you need to call Ken Schieck and volunteer. We can always use new committee members. It’s time for you to get more involved with your chapter and it’s fun too!

Where has the summer gone? Believe it or not, it is time to think about next year. We need several positions on the board filled with new energetic members. Please contact one of the members of the nominating committee if you would like to guide our chapter next year.  We need YOU!     The vote was almost unanimous to have our annual luncheon in January again next year. There are approximately 20 weeks until the December meeting when you will need to pay. Remember the Christmas Clubs? Well, I suggest you put a dollar or two each week in an envelope marked “January AARP Luncheon.”  This way you will be sure to be able to join in the festivities.  We have scheduled that meeting for December 13 instead of December 20. Please note this on your calendar.

President’s Message December 2016

PresidentMarlene Hruby
I have enjoyed being your president for the last two years, and I am ready to hand over the reins to our new president and his board. Installation will take place at the December 13 meeting. I am sure you will support them as you have me. I cannot stress enough the importance of greeting fellow members at the meeting. I cringe when a member says to me that nobody ever talks to them. Please, please use that 9:30 social time to be just that, SOCIAL. If you notice, I spend a lot of that time roaming the room with this newsletter, trying to greet all, especially new members with those leis. Please do this as well as meeting present members you don’t know. There, that’s my last lecture! Here’s wishing you a wonderful Holiday Season and please be sure to join us on January 17 for our Winter Luncheon. Bette will be taking reservations at the Tour Table in the back. We must give a final count the first week. We must give a final count the first week of January AND HAVE GUARANTEED 50!

President’s Message November 2016

As I said at the last meeting, 9:30 is “Social Time.” Besides refreshments, that means meeting and greeting other members, especially new members and visitors. I really hope you will do so. One member told me no one has ever talked to her! We must do better. Please join us for our Winter Luncheon described below. We will have lots of door prizes and our members are volunteering to entertain us.   A good time is promised for all.
